Njord Autonomous Ship Challenge 2024 - Results & Awards

Iceberg ASV competed in the Njord Autonomous Ship Challenge for the first time in August 2024. Our team was awarded the Team Spirit Award, and placed 5th overall in the competition!

Attending the Njord Challenge was an amazing experience for us all. We're coming home with so many new ideas, inspiration, and global connections. The lessons learned here will allow us to innovate and grow in our future competitions

We are especially proud to be recognized with the Team Spirit award. The Njord Challenge creates a friendly environment that encourages collaboration; our team certainly made the most of it. All our team members were there to encourage and to learn from every team. We've made new friends from all around the world including Portugal, Scotland, India, Poland, and Norway.

Thank you to our sponsors and mentors for the support to make this happen!
And of course, special thank you to our whole team who worked tirelessly to allow us to compete!
Congratulations to all teams, and thank you Njord for having us!

Iceberg ASV competed at the International RoboBoat Competition for the second time in 2024. The 2024 International RoboBoat Competition took place in Sarasota, Florida from February 4-11. Eighteen teams from around the globe gathered to compete with their autonomous surface vehicles. Fourteen of Iceberg ASV’s members were in attendance to compete with the autonomous surface vessel — Sonny's Dream.

The results are in:
9th Place Overall, 4th Place Design Documentation, 4th Place Presentation, 5th Place Website

Overall, the team worked amazingly together throughout the entire week by maintaining communication and good spirits. We have learned so much since last year's competition, and we are so proud of how far we have come.

As undergraduate students, it is rare to have the opportunity to collaboratively design and build a complete team and system from scratch. Building an autonomous boat has developed our technical skills and project management skills in an interdisciplinary setting. This project has given the whole team a new outlook on our coursework as team members have been able to apply concepts learned in class to a real-world challenge. Iceberg ASV intends to grow its team and scope in 2025 - from a complete re-design of the ASV to recruitment, the team has big plans for the year ahead!

Student Design Hub Showcase 2023 - Best in Show Award

The Student Design Hub serves as the center of operations and provides support for engineering design teams at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Iceberg ASV is one of the many design teams operating out of the Student Design Hub. Annually, the Student Design Hub invites industry professionals to attend a pitch-style Showcase where all active design teams present in an effort to gain sponsorships. In addition to sponsorship opportunity, industry professionals in attendance vote for a team to win the Best in Show Award. After a successful pitch, Iceberg ASV was awarded with the Best in Show Award, and was able to secure sponsorships from Colab, Verafin, and Genoa Design International.
